For the First Time Users can Personalize Network MFP Touchscreen Menus Directly from their Desktop - Instantly and without IT Support; New Xerox EIP Devices Gain First ImplementationAIIMexpo 2007, BOSTON – April 17, 2006 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions, today announced the PaperPort® Personalized Scanning Platform™, or PSP™, which for the first time empowers office workers with the ability to customize – directly from their desktop – the scanning menus they have available to them on their network multifunction printer/copier/scanners (MFPs). The first implementation of the solution will be Xerox® Scan to PC Desktop™ EIP Edition, an implementation of PaperPort PSP for the newly announced Xerox Extensible Interface Platform™ (EIP) devices. Xerox EIP-enabled devices greatly enhance the ability of solutions providers and software vendors to remotely control MFP touch-screen environments. PaperPort is used by millions of people every day to scan, search and organize documents and photographs on a personal PC and across a network. The ease-of-use and patented features of the product has helped to make it the de-facto standard for scanning from MFP devices, with PaperPort being the core OEM client application of Xerox Scan-to-PC Desktop, EFI Desktop and Desktop Professional and Konica Minolta Unity Desktop and Kyocera. PaperPort is also the OEM scanning desktop for devices from Avision, Brother, Dell, Epson, Fuji-Xerox, HP, Kodak, Kyocera, Lexmark, OkiData, Panasonic, Planon, Sagem, Visioneer and more. “Innovative Nuance scanning solutions combine with customizable open and powerful MFP environments like Xerox EIP to enable this revolution in scan-to-desktop,” said Robert Weideman, general manager and senior vice president for Nuance Productivity Applications. “Now, instead of the static and limited menu items found on most MFP devices and middleware solutions, users can – on their own – extend their desktop folders and personal document workflows directly to the networked MFP menu, making their specific and familiar scanning choices immediately available to them.” The PaperPort Personalized Scanning Platform combines with Xerox EIP to bring “one-touch scanning” to network MFP devices – and in a way that is personalized and familiar to the specific user. The result is an unrivaled level of scanning ease-of-use and flexibility for office workers in organizations of all sizes. First, the PaperPort PSP client provides the user with a visual way to associate which of their specific desktop or network folders they want to have available on the MFP device menu. This allows the device to present a handful of the folders on the user’s PC or mapped network drives, making the specific folders relevant to each user immediately accessible to them. The user can also identify which document processing workflows they want to have available on the MFP device menu, such as scan to searchable PDF, convert to Word, or store in Microsoft SharePoint. This gives users a one-button document workflow experience at the device. For example, by pressing “Scan to Microsoft Word” the completed Word-format file is placed in a specified folder on the user’s desktop or network. With alternative solutions this process would require several manual steps, as well as IT department involvement to configure menus on the device for each individual user. Second, Nuance has developed the PaperPort PSP Plug-in, a light-weight component that bridges PaperPort PSP desktop clients with MFP open interface environments, such as Xerox EIP. Once in place, users can authenticate themselves at any supported network MFP device, and instantly see their personalized PaperPort scanning and document workflow menus on the device touchscreen. Key Features of PaperPort PSP
“Scanning has become one of the greatest productivity features for Xerox MFP customers,” said Roger Ellefson, manager, Xerox Office Solutions Marketing. “The combination of Xerox EIP and PaperPort PSP greatly extends these productivity gains by bringing the individual’s workflow to the MFP touch-screen. The result is a straightforward, intuitive solution for the end-user that is easy for IT to administer.” The ScanSoft PaperPort PSP solution from Nuance implemented for Xerox EIP is in Nuance Booth # 2250 and Xerox Booth #2645 at AIIMexpo 2007 in Boston April 17-19.
