Mass High Tech: The Journal of New England TechnologyBurlington-based Nuance, which develops speech and imaging technology, has purchased Commissure Inc. for an undisclosed amount. As part of the deal, Nuance plans to grant 217,975 shares of its common stock to 21 individuals set to join Nuance, according to the companies. Commissure develops speech-enabled radiology workflow optimization and data analysis technology. The deal provides Nuance with a suite of software focusing on the way diagnostic exams are ordered, interpreted, documented, shared, and analyzed. It also includes an exclusive technology license agreement with Massachusetts General Hospital, according to Nuance. Nuance, which was founded in 1992 as Visioneer Inc., employs about 1,700 workers. In August, the U.S. Department of Justice granted termination of an antitrust waiting period for Nuance's $293 million acquisition of Woburn's VoiceSignal Technologies Inc. In March, Nuance spent $58 million to acquire another Woburn-based company, Focus Infomatics Inc., a maker of health care speech recognition editing services. |
